Light & Dark - March 8th, 2024
The other night, I was saying goodnight to my son. Like most nights, he suddenly had all the questions and was super chatty.
Standing at his door, I noticed the light was interesting and thought, “This looks cool. I’d like to try and capture this vibe sometime.”
When I have thoughts like this, I’m trying to be better at grabbing my camera and getting the shot. It took me two minutes to take these photos and maybe 10 minutes to edit them. I consider those minutes well spent for a few reasons.
The value of capturing moments
I find a lot of value in capturing and documenting my life.
Like most nights, I was anxious to get my kid in bed so I could go to bed. But taking photos and videos of my life helps me to slow down and appreciate the beautiful things around me.
This nightly moment at my kid’s door is ordinary and mundane right now, but I know that someday soon, I won’t be standing at his door saying goodnight.
I’m glad to have a glimpse of these small but significant moments captured for me to reflect on in future years.
Dark photography
I don’t remember where, but I’ve heard that photography is “painting with light.” I like that definition. I liked how the light in this photo highlighted Judah and created a kind of spotlight on these special moments of chatting together.
Also, taking photos with only a small bit of light is more challenging. I’m enjoying learning and embracing the challenge. I’ve been enjoying night photography more and more simply because it’s a little bit new and different for me. The challenge and beauty of dark photos and night photography are helping me fall in love with photography all over again.
Enjoy
Hope you enjoy these. And if you happen to be the one person who reads this, I’d love to know which of these photos strikes you the most and why?
